On WORLD CANCER DAY Yorkshire Cancer Community Chair, Dr Stewart Manning says:
During my 40 years as a Medical Practitioner, most of it spent working as a General Practitioner in South Leeds, I was only involved with cancer patients in my practice.
However, since I joined The Yorkshire Cancer Community over recent years I have taken a wider view of Cancer in Leeds, Yorkshire, UK and Worldwide.
I found out that in 2018 there were 17 million new cases of cancer worldwide and nearly 10 million deaths.
Throughout the world and in the UK there are major differences in cancer outcomes and numbers of people having screening.
Even in Yorkshire we see widely differing results.
We see ourselves as “The Voice “ of cancer patients and their relatives in Yorkshire. Our remit is to try and improve outcomes and screening uptake amongst different communities many of whom find it difficult to engage with health service professionals.
The NHS is struggling in several areas currently, but our standard of healthcare is still superior to that received by the majority of the world’s population.
